Smashies- A Smash Hit at This House

The Winner of the Smashies Giveaway was Jamie.  Congratulations Jamie, we emailed you and will send your winnings when we get your address!

Last month you may remember I reviewed a product named GoGo Squeeze that I discovered at Whole Foods. I loved it, but little did I know there was something called SMASHIES! Smashies are wonderful little NASA inspired pouches of organic apple sauce packaged with kids and travel in mind.. The HUGE advantage of them over the GoGo Squeeze is that they are not made with high fructose corn syrup which makes it the healthier choice.(EDIT 10/13/08 GoGo Squeeze contacted me and informed me that they do not use High Fructose Corn Syrup… my mistake and apologies.  I’m correcting this because it is the right thing to do.)  I gave it to my children to see if they noticed a difference. They were all smiles. They loved their treat and begged for more. As a parent, there is nothing like being able to substitute their favorite snack with a healthier version.

Aside from their lack of High Fructose Corn Syrup, parents can also rejoice that no sugar, preservatives or concentrate are added. The organic certification comes from the USDA. They are also Kosher, Gluten Free, and use no animal bi-products. The packaging is BPA free (even the lining).

Luvli Foods recommends Smashies for ages 5-12, mostly because of the small cap. They do say it is suitable for younger children, just make sure a responsible adult is doing the unscrewing, and that they discard it promptly. My little testers are 2 and 4-years-old and they had absolutely no problem with them. Their site also reminds parents that the children stay seated while eating them. However, they avoid such mess, you may be tempted to let your children walk around while eating them!

Right now Smashies are only available in Apple flavor, but never fear… this great brand will be offering three more flavors by end of year, and three more in the spring.

Where can you buy them? For now do all you can to make sure your favorite market’s manager knows you want them. I would suggest you even write the chain you shop at from their website. In the meantime, Smashies are available for the mere price of shipping and handling, $14.99. That is only $1.50 a pouch which is a dollar less than the price of the GoGo Squeeze pouch.

Here what other parents are saying.

    I learned…that they didnt add sugar b/c they didnt want to stary from what a REAL apple tastes like.

    “Because I have children as well and I don’t want to feed my kids a product that is so different from the real fruit that they don’t recognize it when they actually do taste the real thing.”

    “Our product had to honor the following criteria – always, no ‘ifs’, ‘ands’ or ‘buts’:
    - the kids had to be able to explain it – let alone pronounce it;
    - it had to be USDA organic;
    - packaging had to be convenient – for little kids’ hands, for busy parents’ hands, and for retailers;
    - the packaging had to avoid resource-sapping production, shipment, storage and disposal methods, and ultimately:
    - it had to strike that ideal balance by providing tasty treats that make economic sense for everyone involved.”

    All factors that any parent can appreciate! I can’t wait to find these in my city and give them a try! Thanks for introducing me to them. m_huston(at)hotmail(dot)com
