The linguist in me is forever convincing skeptics that teaching baby American Sign Language (ASL) truly works. It wasn’t about the hype – I saw the magic in my own kids, and that made me a convert. (Before my daughter turned two, she was already speaking and signing several hundred words!)
Naturally, my kids latched onto Scholastic Storybook Treasures ASL series, featuring signed adaptations of best-selling children’s stories including Goodnight Moon (by Margaret Wise Brown), Gladys Goes Out to Lunch (by Derek Anderson), A Creature Was Stirring (by Carter Goodrich), and A Pocket for Corduroy (by Don Freeman).
I love that these DVDs are not only feature sign language, but are also read-along, making the series appealing to my kindergartener who is an eager beaver in the reading department. The signing component might be a little strange to kids unfamiliar with ASL, but in my opinion kids are naturally expressive with their hands and will catch on sooner than one might expect. It might even encourage parents to recite these stories more animatedly to their children than before!
Note that this is NOT a sign language learning program (for this, I highly recommend the Signing Time series). What these DVD’s *do*, however, is enhance sign language learning for the familiar crowd and provide exposure to the newbies.
Scholastic offering free DVD copies of Goodnight Moon and A Pocket for Corduroy! Each DVD contains 3-4 additional classic children’s stories signed and narrated. To enter the giveaway, simply check out their website and leave a comment here that you did.
