Sprout Watches

Because green living is something that many of us are trying do more and more of, I think it’s important to find new ways to be more eco friendly.  Did you know that you can now wear a watch that is eco friendly?  Sprout watches are colorful timepieces that are designed with the planet in mind.  They are made with a corn resin case, bezel, reflector ring, a movement holder, organic cotton strap, natural bamboo dial, and a mercury free dial!  In addition, the company strives for eco friendly practices like shipping by sea rather than air, using smaller, more recyclable packaging, and even taking mass transit and carpooling instead of personal transportation.  Now that is commitment!

Just because they are made using green practices doesn’t mean they forfeit any appeal in appearance.   I like the color combination options and the simplicity of design.  Because of this, anyone can wear these watches!  I am thankful for companies who are thinking outside the box in terms of helping make the planet greener!  Kudos to Sprout Watches!

Vapur

Getting enough water throughout the day is something that many of us struggle to do.  I tend to get headaches when I am a bit dehydrated so I like to have water with me wherever I am.  One of the most innovative water bottles I have seen is the Vapur.

The Vapur is marketed as the anti bottle because of its ability to be rolled up and folded when empty.  This makes it easy to fit into a handbag, briefcase, or even your pocket!  Because the Vapur includes a carabiner, I like to attach my Vapur to my son’s diaper bag!  This is great for portability and storage. The Vapur is also BPA free,  freezable, and dishwasher safe.

Upcycled & organic clothing from Piou piou kids

No Gravatar

When I have a little free time (ha) I love trolling Etsy for fun and interesting products. For those of you not familiar, Etsy is an online marketplace for people to buy and sell handmade products.  It can be overwhelming to sift through the strange (stained glass screendoor suncatchers, anyone?) and the mundane (soooooooo many quilts). But, sometimes you come across a shop like Piou piou kids it’s all worth it!

Handmade in New Zealand by owner and designer Natacha Lee, Piou piou kids uses only organic or upcycled materials.  The products arrive lovingly wrapped in a handmade pouch with handwritten care instructions. I was fortunate to review the Carnival “Wild Things” Hoodie and I fell in love.  The clever design, the bright patterns, the kid-friendly softness, the eco-friendly materials, I could go on! Needless to say this will be a hand-me-down in our family for years to come. You won’t find items like these anywhere else. Check out the adorable shoes made from old hammocks or the baby yoga pants made from secondhand t-shirts.  After a good wash and dry, I am also impressed by the durability of the hoodie.

In today’s world of chain stores and strip malls, it’s incredibly refreshing to buy something from a person. Custom orders are encouraged, so get creative and send a request email with your order. If you just can’t get enough of Piou piou kids, follow Natacha on her blog.

Piou piou kids is offering a $25 gift certificate to one of our readers! Simply visit the site and leave a comment here that you did.  Also, mention doesmommyloveit in your Etsy shop order and receive 10% off!

Bamboo Basics from Kicky Pants

No Gravatar

Not long ago, when the word bamboo was mentioned, all that came to my mind was a panda having a snack. Now that green is in, this highly sustainable, eco-friendly material has permeated most markets and kids’ clothing is no exception.  Unfortunately, too many companies think that green means boring. Fortunately, companies like Kicky Pants are here to save us from the bland!

Kicky Pants combines eco-friendly materials with fashion-friendly designs.  Their bamboo basics are as delicious as your baby. Forget ill-fitting onesies in itchy cotton-blends. The silky fabric (in bold colors and prints) hugs your peanut and keeps them cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter (yes, bamboo is that awesome). The snug designs make your tiny one look and feel extra squeezable.

Let’s not leave mom out of the softness! They also have maternity pieces. Kicky Pants is sold at several retail locations as well as these online stores.

The only downside to bamboo fabric is that you should line dry for minimal shrinkage. But hey, shouldn’t we be saving energy anyway?

snackTaxi reusable sandwich and snack bags

Bid farewell to your plastic baggies and hail an irresistible snackTAXI right now.  What better way to enjoy our planet’s Earth Day celebrations than by replacing your ziplocs with these fun, festive and highly functional reusable bags.  And just try not to smile when you say its zippy name: snackTAXI, snackTAXI.  It’s as addictive as collecting these hip lunch box partners.

snackTAXI started as all great family-friendly products do: with a problem and a motivated mom. Owner Erin Kelly-Dill was tired of sending off plastic bags to the landfill with every lunch she packed for her three kids.  Her locally-made snack bags were the eco-friendly answer.

Each snackTAXI is lined with coated nylon and can be washed and dried (I tried it and they come out great) or simply wiped with a damp cloth.  Larger “taxis” are great for sandwiches, while smaller ones are perfect for sliced fruits or other munchies.  Be sure to check out all of the adorable prints.  You can even let you kids design their own (what??)! I took my snackTAXIs beyond the lunchroom and used them for keeping baby essentials in one handy place during a recent trip.

You can feel great knowing that every time you pop a PB&J into a snackTAXI, that’s one less plastic bag ending up in the trash (along with those veggies that your kid isn’t really eating).

The folks at snackTAXI are offering a Lunch Starter Kit to one of our readers. This includes a large sandwich bag, a snack bag and a napkin!  Simply visit the site and leave a comment here that you did.

ps- in honor of Earth Day, snackTAXI is offering 20% off online purchases this week! Check the site for details and the coupon code. Happy snacking.

Eco-friendly animals from Cate and Levi

No Gravatar

What are your old sweaters doing these days? Mine are folded in storage or lining the shelves of a Goodwill somewhere.  Wherever yours are doing, it’s probably not as fun as what the old sweaters at Cate and Levi are doing. This eco-friendly, Canadian company is giving reclaimed wool a second life in its whimsical puppets and toys.

These delightful animals inspire creative play and offer a snuggly buddy for your child. The silly Walrus puppet had my daughter cracking up. One of my favorite features is the ribbed cuff on the neck of the puppet that gives it a snug fit.  It also felt great knowing that it had been responsibly made.

Cate and Levi uses only natural and reclaimed wool to create its one-of-a-kind items. Owner (and dad) Josh Title seeks to use materials that are sourced as locally as possible to minimize their carbon footprint. Ten percent of Cate and Levi’s profits are donated to children in need.

Be sure to check out the funky Pillow Pals and adorable Zoo Cubes. The Alligator pillow is a favorite of mine!

This is a perfect place to find gifts.  Because each piece is utterly unique, there is no chance of duplication.  Many of the items offer a choice of boy/girl when ordering to influence the color scheme.

Autonomie Project

Fair trade fashion is a tough find for adults, and even more so for kids.  Luckily there’s the Autonomie Project, which recently launched their new line of children’s wear, Little Green Radicals.

You might wonder what the in the world is ‘fair trade’?  Once upon a time, it was only heard in relation to coffee and chocolate, but I’m educating myself a little more these days.  When I buy a product, do I know where it comes from?  How are the materials sourced?  Is child labor involved?  Are any parties being exploited in the process?

Here’s a quick 101. Fair Trade organizations are engaged in supporting producers and campaigning for changes in the rules and practice of conventional international trade.  The strategic intent is:

  • To deliberately work with marginalized producers in order to help them move from a position of vulnerability to security and economic self-sufficiency
  • To empower producers as stakeholders in their own organizations
  • To actively play a wider role in the global arena to achieve greater equity in international trade.

But back to Little Green Radicals.  Whether or not you think global warming is overhyped, don’t sweat it.  No one would argue that caring our environment is, in fact, a good thing (which is why I support things like recycling and cloth diapering).  So regardless of how “green” you stand on the spectrum of green, these designs are very cute.  And perfect for the environmental enthusiasts in your life.  Made from super soft, organic cotton (which is grown using biodynamic agriculture – one of the most sustainable forms of cotton farming) that has not shrunk yet in the wash — our little hoodie has already gone through several cycles.

If you want to try to be more conscious about your apparel and where they come from, Autonomie Project is most definitely worth checking out.  Tees, hoodies, handbags, even footwear – they cover the basics, and also do custom printing.

A couple tidbits that impressed me about this company:

  • They plant a tree for every purchase
  • They re-use all incoming shipping & mailing boxes and materials
  • They don’t have an office – everyone on the team works from home and the company is run virtually through email, teleconference, IM, and text.

How cool is that?

Autonomie Project is giving away a children’s clothing item (of the winner’s choice) to one of our readers!  To enter, simply visit Autonomie Project and then leave a comment here on our site.  For additional entries

Fair trade treasures from Lotus Jayne

Looking to refresh your mind, body and spirit?  Light a candle, get yourself a cup of green tea and head to Lotus Jayne for a bit of retail therapy you can feel good about. From this New Jersey based company, you will find stunning pieces, a strong commitment to fair trade practices and ridiculously affordable prices.

Beauty and integrity is key at Lotus Jayne and this is evident at every turn. Owner, Jill Kimball, has sought (and found) pieces intended to inspire her customers and positively contribute to the supplying communities. Most of the products from Lotus Jayne originate in Cambodia, where the founder’s adopted daughter (and the company’s namesake) hail. Here are just a few of the treasures I have discovered from this truly wonderful company:

Easy Tunic (pictured above). This incredibly flattering top is destined to be your new go-to outfit. A perfectly tailored v-neck flatters the bust and the slits on the sides (genius!) slim the waistline. No sack-like proportions here, thank you. The gorgeous prints make it hard to decide between them. At $24 a piece, you don’t have to.

Sompen’s Shibori Scarf. Perfect for adding a bit of bold color to your wardrobe, this hand-dyed, gossamer silk scarf will carry you through the whole year.  Instantly upgrade a casual shirt and jeans or wear it on a night out. Again, the price is absolutely unbeatable. Check out the photos of the village where your scarf was made for a fair wage!

Tree of Life Pendant. This pretty piece begs to be complimented.  When it is, you can let them know your fabulous necklace used to be a not-so-fabulous bombshell.  One of my favorites from Lotus Jayne, this pendant is lovingly handcrafted from discarded 155mm casings found throughout the Cambodian countryside. Through the non-profit association, Rajana Crafts, this pendant comes to you as a symbol of healing.

Also, be sure to check out the darling Cottage Felt Purse for the little girls in your life. It’s adorable, affordable and would make a perfect gift.

Check back often for new treasures popping up on Lotus Jayne!

Lotus Jayne is offering an amazing giveaway to one of our readers. You will receive the Easy Tunic, Sompen’s Shibori Scarf and the Tree of Life Pendant. All readers can enjoy 10% off using code “mommy” at www.lotusjayne.com. All you need to do to enter the contest is visit Lotus Jayne and leave a comment here that you did!

Episencial and Baby Beehinds from Sprout Baby

No Gravatar

foaming wash

One of my favorite online companies, Sprout Baby, has now started carrying a fabulous new baby care line called Episencial.  Being that one of my son’s favorite books is “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”, I knew by the looks of the baby wash bottle it was a winner!

The organic foaming wash is a gentle and hydrating cleanser that rinses off very easily.  It’s fragrance free with a hint of organic orange extract allowing for a fresh but mild smell.  A cleanser our family has come to truly love.  I finish off the bathing ritual with a baby message using the Episencial hydrating lotion.  During these winter months this product has definitely kept my son’s sensitive skin moisturized.  It includes ingredients such as organic olive, lavender oil, and more, perfect for your little one’s skin!

In addition to the Episencial line, Sprout Baby carries Baby Beehinds Hemp Reusable Diapers!  Made with 55% hemp and 45% certified organic cotton, these diapers keep my son dry for hours! These natural diapers are very soft and adjustable for your growing baby.  I am able to get the perfect fit for my son every time, maximizing his comfort and minimizing any leaks.  It is so soft and durable.  This diaper worked so well there were times I wouldn’t even use the diaper cover.  However, I do highly recommend the Baby Beehinds wool covers.

Sprout Baby.com continues to impress with a well edited selection of products they carry.  I am amazed every time I check out their site for the new, organic, and earth friendly companies they are stocking.  This is the perfect site for moms who choose to go green and also have a high standard of excellence for top quality products!

MEND: who made your bag?

No Gravatar

Have you ever met the person who made your bag? Thanks to MEND, I have. I didn’t meet her face to face, but I know her name. It’s Aber Rose.  I know that she has a beautiful smile.  I know that we both have a daughter named Mercy.  And I know that because of MEND, this former child soldier is now providing a good life for herself and her children.

MEND, a subdivision of Invisible Children, employs women who have escaped lives of slavery by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in Northern Uganda. With waning support for their seemingly endless war against the Ugandan government, the LRA resorted to abducting, brutalizing and training children to fight for them.  At MEND, these courageous women are given sewing skills and a living wage. The means to start their new life.

With all of this do-gooding, it’s hard to imagine that the bags could also be fashionable and functional, but they absolutely are. I was complimented almost immediately when I took my MEND Cinch Bag out for its first spin around NYC.  The colorful, contrasting print lining is a beautiful surprise and size is just right. Mine even went out to a Broadway show and then acted as a diaper bag the next day.  The best part: each MEND bag has a personalized tag bearing the name of the seamstress who made your bag.

When you get your bag, check the tag, then check out the website to read more about the special woman who is now on the mend because of your purchase.

Check out this video of the woman who made my bag! Aber Rose for MEND.

Better Baby Bums

THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED. CONGRATS, NICOLE H., YOU ARE THE WINNER!

Confession: I am a disposable diaper lover. Before my daughter was born I vowed to myself (and the Earth) that I would use only cloth diapers, saving both cash and the planet with one simple act.  But as I changed my newborn baby girl (and changed her and changed her) I realized there was a reason people opt for disposable diapers. It’s so, what’s the word? EASY. And when you have difficulty sleeping, eating and even sitting down in those early days, easiness is a wonderful thing.

Now that I have a 6 month old and life is (a little) more manageable, my eco-friendly Jiminy Cricket has been whispering in my ear. Look at all that trash! You know where that’s going? Straight to the landfill!

Some days I tell him to can it, other days it really hits me. Americans throw away a staggering 49 million diapers per day. Ouch.

Enter Better Baby Bums. Started by two researching mamas, this site is dedicated to all things healthy and natural for your kiddos. I got the chance to test drive two of their all-natural, biodegradable diapers:

Bambo Nature Eco Friendly Diapers These 100% biodegradable diapers from Denmark provided a snug fit and great leakage protection. A cute panda on the waistband gives Elmo a run for his money. They run a little big (so consider that when ordering) but overall a very satisfying product!

Broody Chick Diapers CanNOT say enough about these. Forget for a moment that they are the market’s first fully compostable diaper and totally plastic and chlorine free. They are so soft. Anyone who’s tried natural diapers knows this is a feat! The fit is perfect and there are no leaks for my little chick. As if that wasn’t enough, your diapers come in an adorable (recycled) box. I am a sucker for great packaging.

Right now they are offering free shipping on orders over $50 as well as a free water bottle if you spend $10 (while supplies last).

Better Baby Bums has done the work for you. Shop away and tell your eco-conscience to hush.

Better Baby Bums has some amazing offers for our readers!  They will be giving away a $50 gift card to one lucky reader. Also, enjoy 20% off your Better Baby Bums’ order with code: greenbum.   All you have to do to enter for the gift card is visit Better Baby Bums and leave a comment here that you did!

Go-La Rolla Mat

No Gravatar

THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED.  CONGRATS, JESSICA, YOU ARE THE WINNER!

The Go-La Rolla is a perfect solution to the hard and somewhat dangerous floors our babies are laying or rolling on.  This mat, created by two moms, was designed with babies in mind.  A baby’s skin is sensitive so Go-La Rolla is made organically and eco-friendly.  Your child’s senses were in mind with the creation of this mat.  The waffle covering allows the child to learn and play giving them a tactile experience.  You can attach toys to the built in toy loops and is large enough for them to crawl around on!  One of my favorite features is the fact that you can roll it up and sling over your shoulder for traveling.  This will be convenient for me this summer with the new baby.  We live only five blocks from Central Park.  I can lay the baby on the mat in the park, without worrying about bugs crawling on my little one.  If the ground happens to get your mat dirty, don’t worry because the products are machine washable!

Go-La Rolla is a fabulous product for moms.  Not only is it created with your baby’s interest in mind but also the Earth’s.  All of their products are made in North America and are safe, organic, and eco-friendly!  Yippee for the Go-La Rolla Mat!  They have offered our readers a 20% discount using code: Mommyloveit20

Go-La Rolla has offered a pair of mittens and hat to one of our readers!  To enter, simply visit Go-La Rolla and then leave a comment here on our site.

Hello Rewind

It’s not often that you see so many wonderful concepts in one product.

Hello Rewind takes one of your old t-shirts and crafts it into a cozy sleeve for your laptop.  This kind of upcycling is usually enough to make me reach for my wallet, but the real impact of this company comes from its ambitious mission: to provide women coming out of the sex-trafficking industry in New York City with safe and supportive working conditions as well as fundamental skills needed to begin a new life.

Hello Rewind partners with the Longitude as well as Restore NYC to help sex-slaves victims carve out a new life for themselves.  Because many of the rescued women speak little English and have no marketable job skills, Hello Rewind provides these women with training in sewing, English and basic business skills.  Without means for support, women are often forced back into the sex industry for survival.  Your laptop sleeve may be crafted by one of these survivors with their newfound skills.

How it works:

1. You purchase a laptop sleeve in the size you need (13”, 15”, 17”).

2. Hello Rewind sends you an envelope for your old t-shirt.

3. Your sleeve is crafted.

4. In 4-8 weeks your customized laptop sleeve arrives!

The cost of the sleeve is $49 regardless of size. This price includes the cost of mailing of your t-shirt. The sleeves are specifically sized for Macs, although dimensions are listed for you to size your PC.

In short: upcycling your old t-shirt into a swanky new laptop sleeve while helping victims of global sex-trafficking gain life sustaining skills. What’s not to love?

THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED.  CONGRATS, EMILY M., YOU ARE THE WINNER!

While browsing a store, a particular collection caught my eye.  The brand was “blabla”  and I fell in love with their darling backpacks, all of which are hand-knit in natural fiber made by artisans in Peru.

Tired of plastic and weary of lead, I truly appreciate hand-made toys that my children can grow with. These backpacks are perfect for little ones who want their own pouch for outings (or pretend play), and come in a variety of animals – butterfly, panda, monkey, owl, and so much more.  Each backpack can fit a couple of small books/toys or perhaps a little snack.  The novelty is not so much the size of the bag but the bag itself – beautiful, contemporary, and definitely a keeper.  Backpacks retail at $42.99.

BlaBla has offered giraffe backpack to one of our readers!  To enter, simply visit BlaBla and then leave a comment here on our site.  For additional entries,

Nicole Bridger

Nicole Bridger designs some lovely clothing for women.  I have the lovely asymmetrical top Integrity Top shown above as well as Today’s Tunic that reminds me of a little house on the prairie dress.  Both are made from wonderfully comfortable sustainable organic fabrics and produced ethically.  Bridger interned for legendary British designer, Vivienne Westwood and you can see a bit of the influence in her edgy designs for her namesake label.  The asymmetrical top seen above is cut on the bias and is also a little reminiscent of another favorite designer of mine, Rick Owens.  Even if her line is comparable to a great deal of top designers, the price point is much more attractive.  Visit her website now

Flip and Tumble Bags

As a reusable bag fanatic, I took a strong liking to the Flip and Tumble brand.  Designers Hetal and Eva found a clever and stylish solution for the 24-7 shopper.  The stretch pouch allows a full size bag to mutate into a small ball easily, and in a matter of seconds.

The color designs and patterns are what initially attracted me to the Flip and Tumble collection.  The 24-7 shopping bags come in solid colors and beautiful prints as well. The bike and birdie prints are my two favorites. These can be rolled into the size of a peach and hold twice as much as a grocery bag can!  The bags are constructed using a ripstop nylon that prevents rips and tears. These fit perfectly in my diaper bag and totes. Cleaning them is a breeze as the bags are machine washable!

flip-tumble-3.jpg

Flip and Tumble recently released clever produce bags.  A few weeks ago, I took a trip to my local Whole Foods and used these for my vegetables and fruits.  I was so thrilled to discover Whole Foods gave me ten cents off per produce bag I used as well!  Five produce bags are sold for $11.00 and you will be amazed how quickly you can get your money back from using these, while also helping reduce wastefulness!

Flip and Tumble is an awesome company and I am thankful for it’s quality and their attention to detail.  These are fashionable enough to replace as your designer tote if need be.  Help reduce waste and substitute reusable bags for plastic ones.

Miss Brittany’s Organic Fun Dough

As a child, I used to love to create with play dough.  I could not wait for my child to reach the age to share this experience with.  The possibilities are endless as the creative juices begin to flow. As a green mom, I was fortunate enough to find Organic Fun Dough!

Miss Brittany’s Fun Dough is an organic homemade preschool concoction that’s handmade in the US and comes in five fabulous colors!  The deluxe kit includes three 7oz containers of dough, 100% organic toddler apron, wood rolling pin, and four wooden shape stampers.  This is one of the most adorable collections.  This is definitely on the top of my gift giving selections.  Any child would appreciate this.

Fun Dough is easy to work with and you do not have to worry about any harmful ingredients that can lurk into your child’s skin or mouth.  Fun Dough is made of filtered water, organic flour, Mediterranean Sea salt, organic canola oil, kosher cream of tartar, organic vitamin c, and nontoxic USA made liquid watercolor.  The dough is also packaged in 100% recycled containers that are also made in the USA!

You can’t go wrong investing in a Miss Brittney’s Organic non-toxic play dough gift set.  This is a definite must-have in every creative child’s home.  Did I mention how much I adore their packaging as well?  Lovely!
