Haba Motley Pacifier Chain

6653_HA-001_Front_500x500In my household, I have an avid pacifier user, our son Luke. As a NYC mom who is always on the go, I possess an inexplicable fear that my son will lose his pacifier at the worst possible moments!  Of course, it’s always on the subway during rush hour, or on the crowded sidewalks of Times Square. Not only that, imagine how frighteningly dirty my son’s pacifier can get when dropped on the streets of New York!  To avoid situations like the ones I’ve experienced, I have tried just about every contraption on the market to attach that binky to my child over the past year. The ones with plastic clasps, he could rip right off and subsequently use as a lasso. I found that the metal clips were the best, but as they were all coupled with a velcro cord, it wore off with use. So when I stumbled upon the Haba Motley Pacifier Chain, I was thrilled.  It has lovely wooden beads that are painted with non-toxic paint so I didn’t have to worry about my son having lead poisoning, and it had a large metal clasp that I knew he could not rip off.  In addition,it also ties to the pacifier with a fabric loop so it was also very secure. Unfortunately, even with all of those marvelous attributes, it could have been constructed better: it fell apart in a week. With that said, the beautiful beads became a choking hazard.  I read in one review that the reason it came apart was due to her child being in the “chewing everything” phase, but since my son is past the “chewing everything” phase, I didn’t think I had to worry. Luke had only mildly used it for about a week and when I put him on his high chair to eat, he ripped apart the beads and then the lovely beads looked like candy! So, needless to say I was very disappointed.   Plus, it is quite pricey, costs around $20.00!

Pacifier Holders

My son took the pacifier immediately after he was born. Boy, was it a godsend! The sucking motion helped him sleep well through the night at 3 months. However, his need for his “binky” or “paci” became consistent and storing and taking care of it became another matter. This was his way of self-soothing, so in trying to preserve this, I decided to buy the pacifier holder pod to keep his pacis by JJ Cole. (Other brands made these too — Skip Hop and Kiddopotamus) I thought this was a novel idea…a way to alleviate his crying fits and calm him. It was small, but a stylish way to keep track of his elusive pacifier. Plus, with its “attach anywhere” handle, it attached on a belt loop, diaper bag handle, or a stroller. Furthermore, it kept it sanitary and held two pacifiers. However, I realized after using it several times, the holder itself became just as elusive as the pacifier. If I had it attached on my diaper bag, my diaper bag was in the stroller basket underneath and wasn’t easily accessible. This pretty much left me to leave the pacifier wherever and I ended up losing it. Plus, I don’t usually wear things on my belt loop since I carried my kids a lot. Having it on my stroller wasn’t such a great idea, since I pretty much had everything on there from drinks to keys, shopping bags to books. In the end, it was easier for me to just have the pacifier attached to my son’s clothes with a pacifier clip. In that way, he always knew where it was, which lessened the responsibility for me to take care of it. Additionally, if the pacifier fell out of his mouth, it rarely fell unto the ground. As for cleanliness, in my opinion, whether it’s stored in a pouch or on a clip, it got dirty no matter what. For $7.00, I don’t think it’s worth it.
